The Pleasant Encounters of
“The Fragrances of the Earth”, “The Souls of the Craftsmen”, and “A Pleasure to Eat”
Warabi-mochi is one of the Japanese traditional sweets, it has been familiar in Japan for a very long time, it was Emperor Daigo’s, which reign started in 897, most favorite food for instance.
The texture is distinctively soft (softer than gummy) and its taste is moderately sweet.
Warabi-mochi is made by solidifying the high-quality starch extracted from the root of Bracken (Warabi), a plant from the fern family.
OHTANIDO’s “Warabi-mochi” are hand-made with sincerity, using Japanese domestic ingredients.
OHTANIDO is located in Kawasaki Daishi Nakamise-dori, where a lot of tourists and worshippers visit us. Recently, the number of customers from overseas have kept on increasing. We received many messages from customers telling us that they would like to bring back to our products home as souvenirs.
However, raw Warabi-mochi was not suitable as a souvenir as it expires quite fast.
I then decided to expand our business overseas so that local people could enjoy eating our delicious Warabi-mochi too.
At first, we opened a store in Taiwan for the 2018 Taiwan food exhibition. Visitors from restaurants, hotels, and food wholesalers tasted our Warabi-mochi and their reaction was the same as customers back in Japan, they labeled it as "delicious", so I felt like our business would prosper.
However, we could not find an importer, a wholesaler, or a Japanese exporter to Taiwan that could handle our Warabi-mochi because we had no overseas track record.
How could we have general overseas customers tasting our Warabi-mochi then...?
So, I went to Taiwan again and negotiated with a local company and a store which we previously had exchanged business cards with. Fortunately, we received orders from them. After that, we showed our order results to a Japanese exporter and negotiated with them. Finally, we could export our Warabi-mochi to Taiwan, even though only a small amount …
Currently, we started to export our Warabi-mochi to Thailand, furthermore we have prepared to export to Hong Kong and Singapore as well.
However, exporting our products is not a goal in itself. Our goal is to make original ingredients from local fields like in Japan, to process, to make a unique local "WARABI-MOCHI" with the locals that they can enjoy eating as well.

Customers wants not only food that tastes great, but also healthy, safe food. However, it has become increasingly difficult to obtain domestic high- quality of warabi powders in recent year.
Thus, we started growing warabi ourselves and producing genuine, high quality warabi powder.
Warabi is grown by the old-fashioned method, a root of the harvested warabi is washed well with a clear stream, and the starch quality extracted by crushing and stirring becomes the source of the warabi powder.
We produce genuine warabi powder for a special warabi mochi by ourselves.
Good quality ingredients, and the craftsmanship
We also stick to good quality ingredients, such as beet, sugar and kinako. Good quality ingredients are turned into delicious warabi mochi by skilled craftsmanship.
"Ichi" was created as the only one warabi mochi.
“Ichi” is “1st” in Japanese.
That means beginning of things.
